Prehistory




Morbihan has preserved several remarkable châteaux from the Middle Ages onwards, which are today open to the public and linked by the Dukes of Brittany trail. Various events are held at these sites during the year and, in particular, from April to October. We invite you to discover this unknown, secret world, which gradually unfolds as you cross the threshoid of the park to stroll along tree-lined avenues and walks before reaching the château itself.
Cairn de Barnenez at the highest point of the Kernéhélen peninsula this six thousand years old monument comprises two cairns, or rough stone structures each housing five or six cromlechs, enigmatic evidence of human activity in the megalithic period. Melrand village discovered in 1902, the ruins of this medieval village are today highlighted in a lively and scientific display. An experimental approach to archaeological presentation aimed at all members of the public provides the opportunity to view a garden, rural livestock breeds, historically accurate reconstructions and evocative scenes from real life. The alignements of Carnac erected aroun d 4500 B.C form the largest megalithic site in the world. Their cultural role is generally acknowledged. The sites had to be closed to the public in 1991 to ensure their conservation. The Kermario reception building shows the public what was involved in the restoration of the monument and provides a comprehensive picture of the site. Locmariaquer it is the site of three major monuments of Breton megalithic art built between 4500 and 3700 BC, namely the Grand Menhir Brisé, the Table des Marchand Dolmen and the Er Grab Tumulus. Excava ted and restored between 1986 and 1992, this collection offers the opportunity to discover and appreciate the diversity of Neolithic architecture.
