Musée National de la Marine et Musée de la Compagnie des Indes de Port-Louis: - the Port-Louis national naval museum, jewel in the crown of 16th century Breton military architecture, stands in an exceptional location with views from its impressive fortifications out over the Pays de Lorient bay and ocean. From its privileged vantage point, the fortress of Port-Louis saw the magnificent vessels engaged in commerce between East and West passing out on their way to the Indian Ocean and seas of China. Today it hou-ses the East India Company and national naval museums' collections and, most notably, the boat Commandant Philippes de Kerhallet (1897), a precious and glorious survivor of the earliest days of oar and wind-powered lifeboats in France. New! A new, topical museum space - "Tresors d'océans" - allows visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of marine archaeology with outstanding displays from the wonderful Goddio donation and Mauritius collection. The public can learn all about the latest methods and techniques used by archaeologists to bring to light treasures swallowed by the waves, from the moment of their discovery through to restoration.
Manoir Musée de Jacques Cartier - the manor-house of Limoêlou is a unique memorial to Jacques Cartier, who discovered Canada in 1534. One of the few homes remaining in the world of a great Europea explorer from the 16th century. This Manoir has been restored to evoke the daily life an travels of its famous owner, and is a unique and moving heritage not to be missed. Musée National de la Marine de Brest - enjoying exceptional views over the bay, harbours and La Penfeld in an ideal location at the heart of Brest's military and commercial activities, this château is the most attractive of all of Brittany's fortresses. Besieged, altered, occupied and enlarged, it has been the heart and soul of the city for more than 17 centuries. A prominent reminder of history, the château was built on 3rd century Gallo-Roman foundations and testifies to a rich and turbulent past. On a tour of towers, passageways, battlements, machiolations, mysterious galleries and majestic medieval halls, the visitor can rediscover how harsh and exhilarating life was for the city's defenders. An interpretative room featuring a relief plan of the château has just been opened to the public. The national naval museum, housed in the Tour Madelaine, 15th century Portail Paradis and imposing keep dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, exhibits some remarkable collections, including, in particular, a display devoted to naval innovations in Brest from the 18th century.
