To discover St Malo is to go through a history book with its great men. Their achievements and their works are written down in the pages of the book of fame. Founded in the 6th century by the welsh monks Mac Low, Saint Malo was first established on the Alet Peninsula. In the 12th century, Bishop Jean de Chatillon transferred his bishopric on to the rock which now supports the foundations of the old city. At the end of the 15th century, because of her two marriages (first with Charles VIIIth and their with Louis XIIth, the Duchess Anne annexed the Dukedom of Brittany to the Kingdom of France. Thanks to its seafares and merchant shipowners, who commissioned vessels to Eastern Indies, China, Africa and The Americas, the City enjoyed prodigious prosperity in the XVII and XVIIIth centuries; Jacques Cartier discovered Canada, the privateers Duguay-Trouin and Surcouf contributed to Saint-Malo's outstanding prestige.
