The Design of the town flag: a quarter with a red background (the privateers used red as their attack flag) with an ermine passant tasselled with gold, the colours of the arms of the town, recalling in particular its attachment to the Duchy of Brittany. The white cross and the three blue quarters generally made up the colours of the merchant marine in the XVIIth - XVIIIth centuries. All these contrasting periods have left their mark on the Saint-Malo of today.The 1944 liberation battles devastated the town and destroyed the walled city by 80%. It is from those preserved and restored ruins that Saint-Malo rose again, thanks to a careful and heritage-conscious reconstruction design.
