Lyon


Capital of Gaul during the Roman Empire, in the Renaissance a great city of culture and commerce, then a major industrial centre in the XIX th century, Lyon has become an important European metropolis which has been capable of harmonising to the best all the influences it has received over time. Today it is considered by UNESCO to be part of World Heritage, on the same level as Venice, Prague or St. Petersburg. Fourvière, its basilica and Gallic-Roman area, the Renaissance quarter of the old Lyon around the Saint-Jean Cathedral, the peninsula which was created at the time of the great classical and imperial epoch, the slopes of the Croix-Rousse devised for the working of silk. The historical site of Lyon has been protected and enriched over the centuries. Today, it remains the heart of the life and business of a city which is resolutely oriented towards the future.
